Joining a wider school and a change of environment can be nerve-wracking for children. For some, this change may involve longer days at school and new faces entirely. To help your child in their transition from nursery to “big school”, we have teamed up with a day nursery in St Margarets.
Attend School Open Days
A good way to ease your child into their new school is to attend open days with them present to allow them to familiarise themselves with their new school environment. This can make it seem less scary on the day by allowing your child to get to know a few faces before they start.
Tell Them All About Their New Big Adventure
Build your child’s excitement by having conversations with them about what they can expect from their new school and how much fun it will be to meet new people. This will help them to feel a little more relaxed about the transition and look forward to their move.

Use Their Favourite Fictional Characters to Help Them
Stories are an engaging way to teach children new things. Whether it be potty training or what they can expect from their first day of school by following their favourite fictional character’s journey. Books that you might find useful are The Colour Monster Goes to School, Harry and the Dinosaurs go to School and Do I Have to Go to School?
Homely Comforts and Lucky Charms
A toy or an object that makes your child feel happy can give them a sense of comfort when starting a new school. You may have heard of lucky charms before and dismissed the idea, but did you know that they can be used as grounding tools to exercise mindfulness? These are objects that evoke happy feelings and help by relieving overwhelming emotions.
