The way that our brain processes and retains new information can typically be categorised by 3 main cognitive learning styles that focus on the five senses. While there are several of these, the three main learning styles are kinaesthetic, visual and auditory. By identifying which your child’s dominant learning style is, you can help make their study time more efficient by making the learning process an easy and enjoyable one. We have paired up with a private school in Somerset to share more on what the three main learning styles are.
Visual Learning
Visual learners tend to have a good understanding of aesthetics, allowing them to make sense of body language and remember crucial information using visual objects. Diagrams, note-taking and physical lectures where they can see live demonstrations are beneficial to students with this learning style. If this is your child’s preferred method of learning, colourful learning materials such as highlighters, sticky notes and coloured markers can be of help.

Kinaesthetic Learning
These are learners that enjoy learning by getting stuck in and taking a more hands-on approach. Field trips and practicals are particularly useful for this group. You’ll find that most scientists and mathletes belong to this group as these subjects lend themselves well to demonstrations.
Auditory Learning
Last but not least, we have auditory learning. These learners prefer being told what to do and learn through verbal repetition. They often have musical talents and are very observant of sound. If your child belongs to this group, you may find that repeating instructions to confirm their understanding and speaking loudly to highlight key points helps.
To help your child discover which they belong to, they can do a personality test online. It’s always important to take the results of these with a grain of salt and to practice until they find what works best for them.
