Exam periods – often discussed, sometimes dreaded but always a part of school life.

They’re non-negotiable so it’s best to get a handle on them before they begin!

Talk to your child about exam periods before they get there; this helps them to understand what they’ll be expected to achieve as well as to lessen the mystery somewhat.

This international school in Hertfordshire supports all pupils in their preparation for exam periods and that includes additional help where necessary.

Preparation is the key

If you’ve done your work then there’s nothing to worry about. This is a fact you should always teach your child as they grow. The worry of exams can be significantly reduced if a child is well-prepared.

How to help your child prepare for exams

The first thing to consider is that your child needs a dedicated space in which they can study without interruption. If you have a spare room, this is a better choice than your child’s bedroom. A bedroom is really a place for rest and relaxation and not for work. If your child has been studying in their bedroom, it’s often difficult for them to switch into ‘sleep mode’ once bedtime rolls around.

Ensure that your child has a proper desk, chair and device on which to work. A laptop or PC will suffice. Good lighting is another key element as eye-strain won’t help your child to excel!

Discuss expectations

Let your child lead the way. They should set their own goals and expectations. This is far healthier for them than worrying about disappointing you as a parent.

Ask them if they feel they have any areas in which they’re weak. Discuss potential strategies for getting them up to speed – maybe a tutor would help?

Above all, make sure that in addition to plenty of study, your child also gets plenty of exercise and healthy food. It’s even better if you can get them into a routine of exercise and study prior to the exam period so that they’re not adjusting to a new routine in addition to studying.

If you have any worries or concerns, make an appointment to talk about the exams with your child teacher.

Often, schools will have a special evening for parents during which the exam process will be explained and there will be opportunities to ask questions. It’s a good idea to attend this if possible.
