Extracurricular activities are amazing enrichment tools for your child that allows them to boost their academic and social skills through something they enjoy. In this guide from this independent school in Hammersmith we look at five activities your child can benefit from that can be taken up during school time or after school.
1. Sports
Any kind of sport is a popular activity that children can pick up either through school or through clubs outside of school. A lot of sports teach children communication, how to work as a team and decision making skills. Here are some examples of sports your child can pick up in their spare time:
- Football
- Martial arts
- Lacrosse
- Hockey
- Swimming
2. Scout groups
Brownies, Guides, Scouts and Cadets are some of the main organisations designed for kids to develop a lot of skills that shape us as adults. The main aim is to earn badges in areas like cooking, arts, cleaning, personal care or social work, to name a few, and join in group activities to promote key moral values.
3. Music
Your child may want to learn a musical instrument or join the school choir. Either way, these groups are great for your child to work with others towards a common goal. Oftentimes musical events are put on that parents can attend to see their child perform in front of a massive audience.
4. Performing arts
Drama groups are hugely popular for those keen to pursue a career in theatre or film, and give children a different glimpse into acting and musical theatre. Schools often put on musicals that students can take part in to hone their skills further.

5. Art
With so many different areas of art to explore, from clay making to fine art and graphic design, there’s plenty for your child to discover what they like and get stuck into. They may already have a specific art interest in mind that they’d like to explore.
