Looking for some practice for your child to get in for a maths quiz or to help them with their maths skills in general? Here are a few activities you can try at home that will test your child’s ability from this boarding school in Hertfordshire.

Salute

This game involves two players facing each other with a numbered card stuck to their forehead. Player 1 has to give player 2 the sum to the answer on their player’s forehead (so for example – if player 2 has “4” on their forehead, player 1 can say “what’s 2+2?”). This quick but educational game is great for keeping your child on their toes.

Times Tables practice

Work in groups or in pairs to recite times tables between each other. Someone starts the times table and you work around the circle to quickly answer the next answer in the sequence. This is a good way to get your child to remember their times tables for future quizzes in class.

Using a deck of cards

There are multiple games that will practice your child’s counting skills. A lot of card games involve reaching a number using the cards you’ve got in your hand. For example, the first to 100 game starts with 2 cards and your child must work with the cards they’ve given in each turn to reach 100 before their opponent does. It’s half reliant on the luck of the deck and their quick maths skills to work out how close they are to the magic number.

A creative counting game

This usually involves using symbols that represent a different number. Children have to read the sum that’s now using symbols to work out the answer. For example, a heart symbol is 4 points, and a star symbol is 2 points – a heart + a star would equal 6. This practices your child’s critical thinking skills as well as their maths ability.
