With half term in the UK just around the corner, and the summer break not far from sight, many parents are looking for ways to keep their children entertained. This is particularly true after the pandemic, during which time we weren’t able to do anything particularly exciting with our youngsters. I have teamed up with a private college in London to share some suggestions.
Visit Museums & Galleries
Although children do need a break from school to relax and refresh, it’s important that their learning doesn’t come to a complete standstill. Fortunately, there are ways to make learning fun, like visiting a museum or an art gallery. Entrance into these establishments is usually free, so it is an affordable day out for those rainier days.
Go to the Beach
The UK is home to many beautiful coastlines and will allow your child to get some much-needed fresh air and exercise, as well as a change of scenery. Your child can explore rock pools, collect shells, learn to swim and search for fossils. All enjoyable and educational ways to get your kids out of the house when the weather brightens up.
Organise a Scavenger Hunt
Help your child learn about the great outdoors while having fun with their friends by preparing an outdoor scavenger hunt for them. Ask them to look for things like certain types of leaves and flowers, sticks, feathers, rocks and bark. The more time they spend outdoors, the more likely they are to develop a sense of respect for the environment. Not to mention, outdoor play is great for a child’s physical and mental health.
Bake a Cake
Another option for a rainy day is do some baking. This helps children with their numeracy skills because it involves weighing, measuring, and often converting between imperial and metric units. Perhaps you could consider donating your baked goods to a food bank or care home facility, to teach your youngster about giving back to the community.
Of course, there are plenty more options when it comes to keeping your kids entertained during the holidays, from board games to theme parks. You’ll need to consider your budget, but bear in mind that having fun doesn’t have to cost a penny.
