So how much is the cost of a TV licence and how do you work out the monthly price? It’s pretty simple, 157.50 divided by 12.
Do The Maths
A standard TV licence at the time of writing this costs £157.50. This could easily go up anytime soon as it seems to rise in price year on year. To figure out the monthly cost we just take the annual cost and divide it by the twelve months of the year. So 157.50 divided by 12 is £13.125, or £13.13 if we round it up. Life is expensive right now for a lot of us, so do you really need to pay for it?

Streaming services like Netflix have been binge watched a lot over the last few months. The likes of Tiger King have been watched by millions of people. Yo do not need a TV licence to watch on demand or catch up shows through streaming services such as Netflix. That it, unless you are accessing BBC shows via iPlayer.
Use Your £13.13 For Something Else
We’ve established that 157.50 divided by 12 is £13.13. What else could you do with that £13.13 that you’re paying for the TV licence? This could give you access to Netflix, with change! For £9.99 a month you can access Netflix shows on two devices in HD. You could also watch catch up shows like Coronation Street on ITV hub, Hollyoaks on All4 and other on demand services which are free. As long as you don’t watch BBC shows you don’t need to pay the licence fee. If you did want access to some BBC shows, BritBox is a streaming service you don’t need to have a TV licence for.

Make use of free trials to streaming services. You can get 30 days free with Amazon Prime Video. 7 Days free with Now TV. Free trials are designed and offered to give us, the customer, access to the product, with hope that we’ll continue with the service once the trial ends and we have to start paying. If you don’t want to pay, just watch what you can during the free trial and make a note to cancel it before you start paying. Don’t forget, YouTube has lots of great content on it, for free!

If you don’t watch BBC shows via iPlayer or watch any live TV, you do not need a TV licence. You might get a knock at the door from enforcement officers but they cannot enter your home. You may have heard of horror stories of these enforcement officers trying to gain access to your home but they have no official powers of arrest and cannot enter your home without permission. If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about. Not everyone uses a TV licence so if you don’t, you don’t need to pay for it.
Make your money go further by figuring out what you watch and what you actually need to pay for. It might be the time to cut out one or two of your streaming services and just concentrate on one, knowing you don’t need to pay for a TV licence.
