There are lots of reasons why Physical Education in schools is important for youngsters, not just the fact that it’s a fantastic way to promote a healthy, active lifestyle. Sports are also great for the mental, social, and emotional wellbeing of students. I have teamed up with a private school in Cheshire to explore these benefits in further detail below.

Motor Skills

As well as physical fitness, PE lessons are an opportunity for children to develop their fine and gross motor skills. Motor skills are used every day, by everyone, throughout life, so it’s important that children are given the opportunity to strengthen them.

Self-Discipline

Children who engage in sports become better at self-discipline. In other words, they are able to push themselves and stay motivated so that they can achieve their goals, such as a beating a personal best. They learn to appreciate the sense of fulfilment that accompanies setting and achieving certain goals.

Team Building

PE lessons provide an opportunity for children to spend time with one another, outside of the constraints of a traditional classroom environment. They are able to learn about the importance of teamwork and supporting their peers, in order to reach a shared goal.

Stress Reduction

Sport is a fantastic outlet for releasing negative emotions, such as stress and anxiety, that may be caused by the pressure of academics, friendship problems or tension in a child’s home life. As a result, PE lessons are fantastic for improving a child’s mental health, as well as their physical fitness.

Confidence

As a child become more adept at a particular skill, whether that be defending goals or throwing a javelin, they will experience a sense of achievement that, in turn, gives them a well-deserved confidence boost. They will learn what they are truly capable of if they put their mind to it.
