Your child is heading to nursery, and it’s a very important moment in their learning journey. They’ll be meeting new people, begin to socialise and embrace the world they’re in. It’s also really exciting for kids, and should be a time filled with fun and happiness. Settling into a nursery is another matter however – you’ll need to ensure your child is happy and engaged in their new environment.
In this guide from a private nursery in Paddington, we look at some top tips to help your child settle in nicely to their new nursery.
Voice your concerns early
Talking to your child’s nursery teacher is going to help them understand your child’s expectations before they get started. For the most part, children are able to meld well into their new surroundings within the first few days, but for others it can take a bit more of a push to make them feel confident. Your child’s teacher can reassure you that your child will be able to cope, and if there are any concerns the teacher will know how to handle the situation.

Be prepared for upset children
There are going to be times where your child doesn’t want to go to school at all, or they get really upset about the prospect of heading to nursery school. This doesn’t mean that your child hates where they’re going everyday – it may well be that they’re struggling in this new environment and need to get used to it. Be prepared and anticipate these emotional changes in your child.
Put together a manageable routine
A routine that can be easily followed will keep your child focused on the next stage in their development. Your child will instinctively know where they need to be and what they can do to be prepared in the mornings. Better yet, you can ask your nursery school what they do each morning to help your child prepare themselves in advance. This can then be mimicked at home to reinforce happy and healthy habits.
